And he thought it was funny...

Serious, I don't find it funny no matter how much I tried to look at it from various direction. It was just plain stupid. And not to mention, childish.

Last week, my boss happily announced that he would need volunteers to stay back on Thursday night (till way past midnight) for a special project that would remain confidential right until the day itself. He emphasized on the word 'confidential' so many times, the project sounded serious. I told my mom about it and she thought the whole idea sounded fishy.

Certainly mom was against the idea of me staying back till the dawn of day at work, more so when it was for an unknown purpose. If it was because we have to rush for a crucial deadline, she would have gladly tell me to drive safe on my way home. A confidential project? She was totally against the idea and got into a rage when I suggested sleeping over at my uncle's place for the night since he lives nearby my office. I haven't even tell her that I might just sleep in the office for the night, too lazy to drive anywhere for that matter.

I was curious. Really I was. Partially, I hoped it was a special project about a short film production or a theatre play. Or perhaps producing a book about advertising & marketing. I hoped the project would be something of my interest with benefits to be reaped because that would make staying back at work worthy. And so, I decided to stay back.

In the meeting room an hour earlier, my boss asked every one of us again if anyone would volunteer for the special project. I was the first to raise my hand and volunteered to stay back after work tomorrow night. At the back of my mind, I was looking for excuses to reason with my mom about this matter. She wouldn't be happy, that was for sure.

Only three of us volunteered ourselves for the special project. Looking into each other's eyes, I was sure that if things ever go wrong, we would at least have one another by our side. A few minutes later, my boss announced what the special project is. I am so sure that you guys would be pulling your hairs the moment I tell you what the mysterious project is all about.

Nope, we are not required to work till past midnight tomorrow. In fact, we don't have to work at all. The special project is actually an open invitation for us to attend the premiere screening of Indiana Jones (Kingdom of The Crystal Skull) in GSC Signature.

When my boss turned to look at my colleague who didn't volunteer herself, I saw victory in his eyes as he said, "If you have chosen to stay back and work, you would have gotten an invitation too!"

Gosh, that is just so annoying. I can't believe this is a test/game for him. Suddenly, I don't respect him as much anymore. I believe that TRUST is the key when it comes to maintaining the relationship between colleagues at work. It doesn't matter if it's between a senior and junior or a boss and his employee; TRUST is still very important to ensure a successful team. After this (funny) incident, I felt the little trust I have for my boss has disappeared. It's a different game altogether now.

P/s: Tell me now, is it funny? Because he thinks it's funny. I don't.

Mini Bites of the day: To have someone to trust you, you must first trust someone else first.

well, it is true that ur boss wasnt being completely honest. but at least for the desire to stay back earned you movie tickets so it was not completely fruitless. plus if you only do things to gain something else, then you're not doing it for the right reasons. hence you feel the boss has misplaced his trust. just my 2 cents worth.

Cmate - I'm sorry you felt mistrust and have no respect to your boss because of his testing/game. I think what he did was unfair. I know I would have love to stay back and see the premiere of Indiana Jones (I've been waiting for long time for this movie to come out!) and would be disappointed if others were able to see it and I don't.

I really don't know what to tell you, except to try to see it in your boss's shoes and see from his side and ask yourself "why" did he feel like he had to test the colleagues that way. Maybe he want to see where everyone priority are to the company. To see which is hard worker or whatever....I dunno. But I think it unfair to those who didn't volunteer, only to find out what the project are.

I hope the boss have a heart and decided to give those who didn't volunteer a chance to see the Indiana Jones movie, after all :)
